WASHINGTON, D.C. – June 22, 2023 – The American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) is home to the AMIA Certified Health Informatics Professional (ACHIP™) designation. Launched in 2021, more than 125 health informatics professionals have received the ACHIP™ Diplomate designation. Today, AMIA announces the expansion of eligibility criteria to serve clinicians with baccalaureate degrees and extensive practical work experience in health informatics (between 8 – 10 years).

The certification is designed to recognize the diversity of clinicians in the interdisciplinary field of health informatics. The third track offers certification options to practitioners with baccalaureate degrees in health informatics or a related field from an accredited program, college or university. The ACHIP™ certification provides a recognized credential for organizations hiring informaticians.

“Health informatics is an essential and everyday part of ensuring better outcomes and quality care to patients and families. The front-line work is led by thousands of nursing, public health and allied health professionals who deserve the opportunity and acknowledgement of their health informatics expertise and experience. AHIC certification provides the recognition of competence in the applied practice of health informatics,” said Catherine Ivory, PhD, RN-BC, RNC-OB, NEA-BC, FAAN, Chair of the Health Informatics Certification Commission.

The ACHIP™ certification is open, but not limited to, the fields of dentistry, nursing, medicine, nutrition, computer and information science, pharmacy, public health, biomedical and software engineering, and other health professions. The American Medical Informatics Association created the Health Informatics Certification Commission (HICC) to spearhead health informatics certification. The AMIA Health Informatics Certification (AHIC) development process spanned more than a decade to define the scope of practice, eligibility requirements, and testing for a range of clinicians and professionals in nursing, medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, nutrition and public health. The practice task analysis survey of the field engaged more than 1600 professionals.

Applications for exams are accepted daily and testing may occur any time after eligibility acceptance and notification from the Health Informatics Certification Commission. Eligibility checks with the certification staff are free of charge. For more information contact Chelsea D. Earhart, MBA, CAE, ICE-CCP Director of Certification.
