Received a message from a union representative? Here is what you should know.

Earlier this week, a situation was brought to the attention of AMIA members, staff, and leadership. A union representing workers in the hotel industry across several cities, UNITEHERE!, has contacted a number of AMIA members by email and mentioned the AMIA 2024 Annual Symposium venue (Hilton San Francisco Union Square). Because this is a union in several states, meeting hosts around the country with conferences at major hotel chains are being contacted.

Why have members been contacted?

The union labor contract has expired and as a result UNITEHERE! is calling and messaging customers with upcoming meetings in 2024, including our meeting at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square, to discourage business at this property as a bargaining tactic.

The bottom line

We are hopeful that a resolution will be reached soon, and there is currently no need for concern. AMIA has been advised to encourage its staff and our members not to engage with the union as the current situation is an active contractual negotiation between hotels and a labor union.

What is next?

As is AMIA’s standard preparation for all meetings, we will continue to communicate closely with leadership at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square to ensure a safe and seamless meeting experience during your time in San Francisco. We have been assured AMIA will receive regular updates on progress towards a resolution of this matter. While early, we also have been told the hotel has several contingency plans in place to ensure staffing and services should a resolution not be reached or should a strike occur.

If you have questions or concerns, we are here to help you. We look forward to seeing you at the AMIA 2024 Annual Symposium!

Sincerely,
AMIA Meetings Team
