Special Message from the AMIA President and Board Chair
As the AMIA Board Chair, I am honored and privileged to represent your community and your needs to the AMIA Board.
Clinical informatics is an integral piece of our profession, and I look forward to working with each of you as we continue to transform healthcare through the advancement of informatics.
AMIA has always been the professional home for clinical informatics physicians. We have 1868 physicians board certified in the subspecialty of clinical informatics and we aren’t going to stop there. Each year, our Clinical Informatics Board Review Course prepares the next round of diplomates. We all share the goal of improving patient care. And while informatics is an interdisciplinary profession, I understand that each group has different professional needs such as MOC IV requirements.
AMIA offers many ways to engage within CICOP and general clinical informatics communities.

AMIA also represents CICOP through relationships with organizations that impact clinical informatics diplomates such as ABPM, ABPath, and CMSS.
If you plan to attend one of the upcoming AMIA conferences, I would like to invite you to the Voices of AMIA – Member Listening Session for Strategic Planning. These sessions – which will be held at each 2020 AMIA conference – provide an opportunity to share your questions, suggestions and concerns as part of our strategic visioning process.
With AMIA as your professional home, there are many opportunities to connect as a community. AMIA provides the networking platform, AMIA Connect, as a host for your discussions. In a community with 1000+ diplomates, this is the perfect place to collaborate with other clinical informatics physicians.
The Clinical Informatics Conference has become AMIA’s fastest growing conference – surpassing 600 attendees last year and more than doubling our submissions for 2020. This is where people just like you come to learn and present what is working in day-to-day applied clinical informatics. Ample CME is offered for this conference.
I understand the clinical informatics physician group has different needs for professional growth. In 2018, AMIA created the Fellows of AMIA (FAMIA) program – a formal recognition of applied clinical informatics professionals. The new class will be inaugurated at the 2020 Clinical Informatics Conference bringing the group to more than 300 Fellows. Later this year, we will organize a FAMIA task force providing you with an opportunity to become more involved in the program. Applications for the next class of Fellows will open in May.
AMIA’s conferences provide several networking and collaboration opportunities, as well as opportunities to become involved in the conference itself. If you are not involved with AMIA in any way, I encourage you to consider volunteering your time on a conference planning committee or submitting content to a meeting. Both of these offer professional development opportunities to continue your advancement as a clinical informatics physician. I know my time serving on planning committees was extremely valuable not only to see how much our field is constantly evolving, but to be able to meet other members to collaborate with. This opportunity also helps AMIA as your professional home. Your participation helps to increase the visibility of AMIA as we all work on our collective goal to transform healthcare.
As I mentioned in my message to the AMIA membership, it is important to me that we remain committed to transparency between the AMIA Board and the AMIA members. Your voice is being heard, and I welcome you to reach out to me or any of our board members with questions, concerns or suggestions. Your community and your needs as a clinical informatics physician are important to me and to the AMIA Board.
