The American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) announced the appointment of Tanya Tolpegin, MBA, CAE, as its new Chief Executive Officer.
Tolpegin was unanimously approved by the AMIA Board of Directors. She will begin her role June 21. AMIA formed an Executive Search Committee in the summer of 2020 and partnered with WittKiefer to conduct a national search for the position.
“AMIA’s Executive Search Committee performed a national search and robust assessment of candidates,” said Patricia C. Dykes, PhD, RN, FAAN, FACMI, AMIA President and Board Chair, and Program Director of Research at the Brigham and Women’s Center for Patient Safety, Research, and Practice. “We have every confidence Tanya will be the effective leader AMIA needs as we embark on the initiatives and goals of our new strategic plan.”
Tolpegin comes to AMIA after serving more than five years as the Executive Director of the American Academy of Audiology (AAA) and its separate foundation where she leveraged the academy’s role in the healthcare field by increasing awareness, growing membership, developing program initiatives, and seeking opportunities for advantageous partnering with other societies and associations.
While at AAA, she also managed three other associated organizations — the Accreditation Commission of Audiology Education, the American Board of Audiology, and the Student Academy of Audiology. She reported to five different boards and worked with numerous committees and councils under each.
A consultant, leader and executive, prior to joining AAA, Tolpegin has held two other CEO positions: the CEO of the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography, and the CEO of the Professional Landcare Network (PLANET). She consistently grew both membership and sponsorship, delivered a positive net income, increased revenues, and raised the profiles of the organizations she led.

I am confident my background in executive leadership will advance AMIA in its mission, and will position AMIA and its members as a key component in the evolving healthcare space.”
Tolpegin will oversee the programmatic, administrative, and management activities of AMIA including the advancement of new programs that have important business opportunities for AMIA. She will work with the President and Board Chair to consistently articulate and make known AMIA’s position on important informatics issues, both to the membership and external audiences, and represent AMIA in interactions with government and other policy making forums, industry, scientific organizations, academic institutions, and other organizations that are relevant to the field of informatics.
The President and Board Chair will remain the active spokesperson of AMIA for informatics expertise.
Tolpegin received her Master of Business Administration from the University of Virginia, Darden Graduate School of Business Administration in 1994 and her bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering from the University of Virginia in 1990.
