Historic ACMI Biography
Dr. Panko received his bachelors degree in Chemistry from the University of Illinois, his PhD in biochemistry from the University of Missouri, and was a postdoctoral fellow in the Biology Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He was appointed to faculty positions at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, and the Department of Pathology at Baylor before trying his hand in information technologies as a Senior Scientist and Manager of the Information Technology Group at Bolt Baranek and Newman in the late 1980ís. In 1990 he became Director of Information Technology and Networking at the University of Michigan Medical Center, and at the time of election to the College was Professor and Director of the School of Biomedical and Health Information Sciences, and Assistant Vice Chancellor for Health Informatics at the University of Illinois, Chicago. Dr. Panko has been a longstanding proponent of wide area networking in support of education, research and patient care. He is editor in chief of the journal Clinical Laboratory Science and a frequent contributor to AMIA conferences, including serving as vice chairman of the 1994 AMIA Spring Congress. His election to the college recognizes these academic and professional service accomplishments.
