Thomas Payne, MD

I am Professor of Medicine, and Biomedical Informatics & Medical Education and Adjunct Professor in Health Services and I serve as Attending Physician in Medicine at the University of Washington Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center. I attended Stanford University, the University of Washington School of Medicine, completed my internal medicine residency at the University of Colorado, and completed a fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital in the Harvard Medical Informatics Fellowship program. Iím board certified in Internal Medicine and Clinical Informatics. For about 20 years ending December 2019, I was Medical Director of UW Medicine IT Services. My major professional interest is the use and evaluation of clinical computing systems, especially EHRs, and their use in patient care, research, and quality improvement. Iím also interested in electronic notes in EHRs, natural language processing, and studying operations of clinical computing systems: how we support users, plan maintenance, recover from downtime, and in general keep them continuously operating.
