Michael Zaroukian, MD, PhD, MACP, FHIMSS. Recently retired Vice President and Chief Medical Information Officer for Sparrow Health System. Professor Emeritus of Medicine at Michigan State University. Bard-certified clinical informaticist. Past chair of HIMSS North America Board of Directors (2016-2017) and HIMSS Enterprise (Global) Board of Directors (2017-2018). Provided physician leadership for Sparrow’s HIMSS Stage 7 recognitions (2014, 2018 and 2022) and HIMSS Enterprise Davies Award (2018). Received Sparrow Physician of the Year Award in 2014 for his leadership in implementing the iSparrow (Epic) electronic medical record system. Have served on informatics-related National Academy of Medicine committees, as well as ONC Health IT Policy and Standards Committee workgroups and taskforces. Past chair of American College of Physicians (ACP) Medical Informatics Committee. Served on the American Medical Association (AMA) Health IT Advisory Committee. Received the 2010 HIMSS Physician IT Leadership Award and the 2015 American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) Leadership Award. Received a "Top 25 Clinical Informaticists" award from Modern Healthcare in 2012. Was named among “26 of the Smartest People in Health IT” by Becker’s Hospital Review in 2014. Recognized by Becker’s in 2022 as one of “33 inspiring chief transformation officers in healthcare.” Currently serves as co-chair of the governor-appointed Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Health Information Technology Commission.

The committee recommends advocacy issues and activities and identifies critical areas for AMIA's strategic advocacy engagement for Board approval. The committee works with AMIA’s policy consultant, staff, and Board to develop annual work plans which support the strategic directions set by the Board. The committee works with the staff in developing and reviewing draft submissions in response to requests for comments in support of AMIA positions and helps prepare position papers on matters of public policy.
