Mary Goldstein, MD, MS in HSR

I am a Professor of Health Policy at Stanford University School of Medicine. After serving in several roles at VA Palo Alto Healthcare System, I transitioned in VA to the role of Director of Data Analytics, Quality Improvement, and Research for the Office of Geriatrics and Extended Care in VA Central Office. My past roles at VA Palo Alto included the Chief of Medical Service at VIce-Chair for Veterans Affairs in the Department of Medicine, Stanford University, and Professor of Medicine in the Center for Primary Care and Outcomes Research, Stanford University, Stanford, California. As Medical Service Chief, Dr. Goldstein leads a large program to advance health and health care for Veterans across multiple subspecialties and primary care programs. The Medical Service includes extensive clinical and teaching programs, as well as research programs in basic, clinical, and health services research. Dr. Goldstein is a geriatrician and an ABPM-certified clinical informaticist. Dr. Goldsteinís own research focuses on quality improvement in health care through improved medical decision making, with patient-centered approaches to care. Her research team develops and implements clinical decision support (CDS) for health professionals that takes account of multiple co-existing conditions that many older adults may have (ATHENA-CDS system; MedicationSafety-CDS). In the FLAIR project (Functional Limitations And Independence Research), her research team interviewed more than 1,000 older adults to understand how they rate the quality of life of health states such as functional dependency in Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). FLAIR utility elicitation used multimedia software to explain and facilitate standard gamble ratings. Dr. Goldstein also collaborates with other investigators on projects applying natural language processing to free-text in electronic health records, and on projects exploring the roles of emotion and of ideal affect in decision-making. Dr. Goldstein received her undergraduate degree, majoring in philosophy, from Barnard College, and her medical degree from the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Columbia University in NYC. She completed residency at Duke University, and fellowship at Stanford University. She has served on many committees and boards, including the Board of Directors of the American Geriatrics Society, and the National Advisory Committee of the Robert Wood Johnson Physician Faculty Scholars Program. Dr. Goldstein was the 2010 recipient of the Department of Veterans Affairs Undersecretaryís Award for Outstanding Achievement in Health Services Research.
