Jochen Moehr, MD

Dr. Moehr obtained his Dr. med. (M.D.) from the University of Marburg, Fed. Rep. Germany, in 1965 with a dissertation in clinical chemistry. After research and clinical work, he joined the Division of Medical Informatics at Hannover Medical School in 1970, where in 1976 he obtained his Habilitation (Ph.D.) in Medical Informatics. From 1977 until 1986 he was professor at the University of Heidelberg and Director of the Division of Medical Informatics. In this capacity he directed the development of a hospital information system for the University's large hospital complex and research and teaching facilities. He has also conducted research on the use of computers in medical practices, pharmacies, and other environments since the early seventies. His educational responsibilities included the direc¨tion of a specialised curriculum in health informatics in the early formative stages. In addition his teaching included courses for medical students, nurses and laboratory technicians in health informatics. Dr. Moehr also was involved in educational initiatives of the German Society for health Informatics (GMDS) since 1970. These activities included development of a certificate program in health informatics in the late seventies and chairing the Board Commission for Education from 1982 to 1986. In 1986, Dr. Moehr joined the School of Health Information Science of the University of Victoria and teaches a variety of courses in the undergraduate program Dr. Moehr has graduated 12 doctoral students under his supervision, and 35 masters students. His research interests currently focus on communication and integration related to health information systems. Dr. Moehr has served in numerous capacities in national and international learned societies, such as the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA), Gesellschaft fuer Informatik e. V., (GI), Gesellschaft fuer Medizinische Dokumentation, Informatik und Statistik e. V., (GMDS), Canadian Association for Advancement of Computers in Health, (COACH), American Association for Medical Systems and Informatics, (AAMSI). He organized national and international conferences on the use of computers in various fields of medical practice, health care and education. Most recently, he served as Chair, International Scientific Program Committee, IMIA Working Conference International Symposium Education and Medical Informatics, Victoria, 1989, and Vicechair, International Scientific Program Committee, Seventh World Congress for Medical Informatics, Medinfo '92, Geneva, Switzerland.
