Public Biography
I work to help doctors and patients make better, more informed decisions. I pursue this goal by studying how to design information technology that will improve decision-making in health and medicine. I also seek to inform informatics policy by evaluating the effects of information technology on clinician and patient decisions. This evaluation research involves secondary analysis of electronic health record data, as well as survey studies and qualitative research. My work has led to advances in biomedical informatics, human factors, and decision science. It is also highly practical, and I am gratified that it has been deployed to produce measurable impacts on real-world healthcare. --Effects of IT design on decisions --Health literacy, health numeracy, and communication. --Patient access to medical records --Physician choices when using the EHR, and relationship with healthcare quality --Socioeconomic disparities in information access --Rigorous evaluation studies of health IT
