Public Biography
Dr. Corrigan recently retired as president and chief executive officer of the National Quality Forum (NQF), a post she held since 2006. Her tenure at NQF was marked by significant enhancement and expansion in NQFís standard-setting program for performance measures, and NQF-endorsed measures are now widely recognized as the ìgold standard.î Under Dr. Corriganís leadership, NQF established two multi-stakeholder partnerships that serve in a consultative capacity to the US Department of Health and Human Services in setting national priorities for improvement and in selecting measures for use in payment and public reporting programs, thus ensuring that regulatory processes are informed upstream by all stakeholders impacted by their decisions. Prior to joining NQF, Dr. Corrigan was senior board director at the Institute of Medicine, where she provided leadership on a series of groundbreaking reports, including ìTo Err Is Human: Building a Safer Health System,î which brought to light the widespread impact of adverse events within health care in the US, and ìCrossing the Quality Chasm,î which called for fundamental reform of the health system. Dr. Corrigan earned a Doctorate in Health Services Organization and Policy and a Master of Industrial Engineering from the University of Michigan, and Mastersí degrees in Business Administration and Community Health from the University of Rochester.

Dr. Corrigan received her bachelorís degree in social services from Syracuse, an MBA from the University of Rochester, and a masterís degree in industrial and operations engineering and a PhD in health services organization and policy from the University of Michigan. She served with the Physician Payment Review Commission in Washington, the Group Health Association of America, and the National Committee for Quality Assurance, where she helped create the widely implemented Health Plan Employer Data and Information Set performance measures. She was a principal researcher at the Center for the Study of Health System Change, executive director of the Presidentís Advisory Commission on Consumer Protection and Quality in the Health Care Industry, and Senior Board Director for the Institute of Medicine Board on Health Care Services, which produced the ìTo Err is Humanî and ìCrossing the Quality Chasmî reports. She is now President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Quality Forum, and her election to the College recognizes these influential
