Public Biography
Genevieve Melton-Meaux, MD, PhD, FACMI, FACS, FACSRS is Professor of Surgery and Health Informatics, Director for the Center for Learning Health System Sciences, and Senior Associate Dean for Health Informatics and Data Science at the University of Minnesota where she also serves as the Associate Director for the Clinical NLP-IE (Natural Language Processing-Information Extraction) Research Group and Program Director for the Clinical Informatics Fellowship. At M Health Fairview, Genevieve serves as the Chief Health Informatics and AI Officer leading its Clinical Variation Reduction program promoting appropriate and personalized evidence-based care, health informatics, and AI/ML program. She is immediate past president and an elected fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics and serves as chair of the American Medical Informatics Association. Dr. Melton-Meaux is board certified in surgery, colon and rectal surgery, and clinical informatics. Her research interests are clinical NLP, applied clinical informatics including surgical informatics, enhancing note usage in EHRs, optimizing clinical AI best practices, improving evidence-based care with Health IT and digital solutions, and advancing learning health system capabilities.
Historic ACMI Biography
Dr. Melton-Meaux contributions to informatics are at the intersection of informatics research, applied clinical informatics practice, and surgery; she is a unique ambassador to the field of informatics. As Associate Professor of Surgery, Health Informatics Core Faculty and co-Director of the Natural Language Processing (NLP) Program at University of Minnesota (UMN), she develops and applies clinical NLP tools - ranging from theoretical analyses characterizing clinical texts, NLP tools for operative reports and other specialized texts, and use of NLP for clinical research; evaluates biomedical terminologies; researches optimal clinician use of patient documents in EHRs; and is a leader in surgical informatics. She was awarded the 2013 Young Investigator of the Year and 2015 Graduate School Advising and Mentoring Award at UMN.
