Historic ACMI Biography
Dr. Quiros received his MD degree from the University of Buenos Aires and subsequently spent more than 20 years leading health information system projects and training informaticians at Hospital Italiano in Buenos Aires. He was one of the leaders in the development of Hospital Italianoís advanced electronic medical records system called ITALICA, including its use of standardized terminology and interface terminology servers built upon international health vocabulary standards such as SNOMED and messaging and knowledge representation standards including HL7. He founded Hospital Italianoís Department of Medical Informatics in 1999, which has been a center for operational systems development, informatics education and research. He has been a proponent of interoperable systems development in South America and has pioneered the use of international web services for clinical decision support that transcend international boundaries. In his role as educator, he facilitated the adoption of the Oregon Health and Science Universityís 10x10 AMIA course so that it has now been used to train more than 600 healthcare professionals in Latin America in their own languages and cultures. His election as an International Fellow of the College recognizes these scholarly contributions to the advancement of informatics globally.
