Public Biography
I am a Research Associate and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Utah where I actively participate in the design, development and study of innovative clinical software applications. Prior to that, I was a Professor of Clinical Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine and a Research Scientist with the Regenstrief Center for Biomedical Informatics (RCBMI). In that role, I oversaw the software engineering activities and infrastructure that enabled their clinical application development. I am the principal architect of the open-source CareWeb Framework, an extensible, composable, web-based framework that serves as the foundation for many of the provider-facing applications developed by RCBMI. I am a board-certified general internist with formal training, and over 30 years experience in healthcare informatics and health services research. My prior experience includes 12 years with the VA as a practicing primary care physician and clinical informatician where I was the principal architect and developer of the VHAís national distributed clinical data repository and decision support system. Later, while working in the private sector, I developed the VueCentric Framework, an extensible, component-based architecture adopted by the Indian Health Service as the foundation for their electronic health record, the RPMS-EHR.
