The new NIH Data Management and Sharing (DMS) policy, which goes into effect on January 25, 2023, will promote the sharing of scientific data from NIH-funded research. Sharing scientific data accelerates biomedical research discovery, in part, by enabling validation of research results, providing accessibility to high-value datasets, and promoting data reuse for future research studies. Under this new policy NIH-supported researchers are required to submit a Data Management and Sharing Plan and comply with the approved Plan. During this webinar the speakers will discuss the value of data sharing for the research enterprise, provide an overview of the DMS Policy and implementation activities, and discuss the importance of informatics in enabling rigorous data collection and capture, management, and sharing.

Teresa Zayas Caban, PhD, FACMI
Dr. Teresa Zayas Cabán is Assistant Director for Policy Development at the NLM. In this role she leads NLM's policy development and implementation activities.
Dr. Zayas Cabán was previously Chief Scientist at the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) where she led ONC’s scientific efforts and activities. Prior to her position at ONC, Dr. Zayas Cabán was the Chief of Health IT Research and Acting Director of the Division of Health IT at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). While at AHRQ, she set new directions for their funding opportunities and coordinated with federal partners, such as the National Science Foundation.
Dr. Zayas Cabán obtained her doctorate in industrial and systems engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she was a National Science Foundation graduate research fellow in industrial engineering.
Taunton Paine, MA
Taunton Paine, MA is the Director of the Scientific Data Sharing Policy Division in the Office of Science Policy at the NIH. Taunton has been with the Office of Science Policy since 2011. His division is responsible for issues relating to data sharing policy, including issuance of the recent NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy, oversight of the NIH Genomic Data Sharing Policy, and management of the Data Science Policy Council. He holds a dual master’s degree from Columbia University and the London School of Economics and Political Science where he studied the history of international relations.
