The mission of the UPMC Clinical Informatics Fellowship is to train excellent clinical informaticists who will succeed as clinical informatic leaders in any setting they choose. Using the resources available in UPMC's large integrated health care system and the University of Pittsburgh Department of Biomedical Informatics, our fellows will get a broad and deep training in the theory and practice of Clinical Informatics. UPMC is a large integrated health system with over 40 hospitals and over 800 doctor's offices and outpatient centers. Fellows will have the opportunity to work on projects that influence both many hospitals and large populations of outpatient clinicians and patients. A unique feature of our program is the opportunity to be exposed to informatics related to payor concerns and population health by working in the UPMC Health Plan, an insurer with more than 3.9 million members which offers a full range of group health insurance, Medicare, Special Needs, CHIP, Medical Assistance, behavioral health, employee assistance, and workers' compensation products. Fellows will also work in with innovations while rotating through UPMC Enterprises. Fellows will be trained to use information systems, leadership skills, change management, and quality improvement methodology to serve academic institutions, community hospital systems and our communities by providing outstanding patient care through technological innovation, research, and education. In addition, this coming years' fellows will get special exposure to implementing new systems over a large and complex organization, as UPMC will be undergoing a major new implementation of Epic.
