The Health Informatics Program at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is one of the eight programs offered by the School of Health Professions. The program offers a STEM designated 39-credit Master of Science in Health Informatics degree program with distance learning (online) and traditional in-person (evening only) offerings with flexible full-time and part-time program completion options. The MS curriculum was designed to cover a broad range of topics that are relevant to address industry demand and health informatics workforce development. Health informaticians facilitate the effective use of health-information technologies (including EMRs) that are critical for delivering quality patient care. Recent developments have spurred on the need for educational training in informatics such as increased attention to patient safety, the rapidly developing field of AI, and the need for increased responsiveness to crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. The Health Informatics curriculum at SUNY Downstate covers a wide range of knowledge and skills essential for working in various healthcare settings. The program prepares graduates to assume various roles and responsibilities in health informatics that include designing, implementing, and supporting clinical information systems including EMRs, educating staff, analyzing data, evaluating and improving existing health care information systems, and coordinating between clinical and IT teams to enhance healthcare operations and policies. As one of the most affordable graduate programs in informatics and a top choice for students in New York area, our health informatics program stands out due to its affiliation with an academic medical center, small class size, flexible course delivery for online students, evening classes for in-person students, experienced faculty, hands-on curriculum approach, and a required clinical internship. It boasts a high graduation rate, easily accessible location in central Brooklyn, opportunities for research and community-based interdisciplinary projects. The program is a member of AMIA's Academic Forum, International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA), and Academic Affiliation Program of HIMSS. The program accepts application for Fall, Spring, and Summer admission. The program also offers a 15-credit online advanced certificate in health informatics.
