Geisinger is thrilled to offer a two-year ACGME-accredited Clinical Informatics (CI) Fellowship. The fellowship is open to all physicians who have successfully completed an accredited residency program in any medical specialty.

Clinical informatics is a relatively new subspecialty of medicine. While physicians have been practicing CI for many years, formal board certification and accredited fellowships have only been available since 2013. Geisinger’s CI fellowship has been accredited since 2015, and accepted its first fellows in July 2016.

The fellowship is organized and implemented through Geisinger’s Division of Informatics. The division enhances healthcare with a unified informatics and data analytics approach to improve patient experience and outcomes. The four departments within the division are Clinical informatics, Enterprise Information Management and Strategy, Geisinger in Motion, and the Health Sciences Libraries.

Clinical Informatics at Geisinger is a multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, allied health professionals and IT technical informaticists, working together to challenge common practice, embed best practice, carefully apply cutting edge technology, and facilitate discovery through the application of informatics. Geisinger is a recognized leader in using advanced analytics on integrated and innovative data through our Enterprise Information Management and Strategy department. Geisinger in Motion promotes the effective use of technology to initiate patient and provider engagement across a distributed healthcare delivery network. Our Health Sciences Libraries provide clinical staff, researchers, scientists, patients and members of the community with access to clinical, evidence-based practices, journal articles, books and research housed in digital resources.

Fellows will gain exposure to a diverse range of clinical and health information systems by rotating at our various health system hospitals and centers. This will provide experience for our fellows with EPIC, Cerner, multiple ancillary clinical systems, PACS and our KeyHIE health information exchange. Fellows will work closely with our team of physician and nurse informaticians, clinical departments and clinicians in the field, Geisinger Health Plan, and our system’s leadership. Didactic support will supplement the clinical experiences to ensure that fellows are fully exposed to the clinical informatics curriculum. Our health information exchange and active research into information systems interoperability will provide experience in advanced application of mobile, cloud based interoperable solutions. Fellows will also have the opportunity to explore entrepreneurial aspects of health IT.
