The Lead Nurse Planner works collaboratively with the Director of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to ensure the Accredited Provider Unit operates according to Accreditation Program criteria. Administrative functions of the Provider Unit, within the parameters established by AMIA, are the responsibility of the Lead Nurse Planner and the Director of CPD.
Keeping Current with Criteria and Implementation
The Lead Nurse Planner needs to know and use the resources and tools for keeping up-to-date on requirements and changes in criteria. The Lead Nurse Planner functions as the liaison between the Director of CPD, the ANCC Accreditation Program Office, and AMIA’s Scientific Planning Committees (SPC).
Educator
The Lead Nurse Planner may serve directly in the educator role or may assist and mentor others in that role. The Lead Nurse Planner is expected to be knowledgeable in the area of adult learning and to be able to assess needs; analyze gaps in knowledge, skill, or practice; plan and implement learning activities; and evaluate educational outcomes. The Lead Nurse Planner needs to be aware of changes in the learning and practice environments that affect learning and learning needs and must be supportive of organizational changes that promote implementation of new learning in practice. The Lead Nurse Planner needs to be creative in developing learning activities in modalities that most effectively meet the needs of the target audience served by the Provider Unit.
Planning, Development, and Evaluation of Learning Activities
The Lead Nurse Planner is an active member of the SPC for each of AMIA’s yearly conferences and other educational activities where ANCC credit is offered. These currently include two conferences: the Clinical Informatics Conference and the Annual Symposium, as well as a limited number of online enduring materials. The Lead Nurse Planner mentors AMIA’s SPCs in planning and developing learning activities that will enhance the professional development of nurse learners. He or she stays abreast of evidence-based practice and best available evidence from research data and other sources to guide development of educational activities that will facilitate quality nursing practice. In conjunction with the Director of CPD, he or she develops appropriate evaluation mechanisms for activities where nursing credit is offered.
Evaluator
The Lead Nurse Planner is involved in evaluation in several ways. This person participates in evaluation of individual learning activities in which he or she functioned as the Nurse Planner. This first-hand view helps the Nurse Planner look at the effectiveness of the learning activity in achieving its purpose. The Lead Nurse Planner is engaged in review of evaluation data from other learning activities conducted by the Provider Unit. The Lead Nurse Planner helps others involved in a learning activity evaluate its merits and opportunities for improvement in their work with the individual SPCs. The Lead Nurse Planner assumes a role in evaluation of the Provider Unit itself. He or she works with the Director of CPD in that process, but the Lead Nurse Planner drives the process of evaluating education directed at nurses.
Reporting
The Lead Nurse Planner is accountable for communicating information to the ANCC Accreditation Program and sharing all communications from the ANCC to AMIA with the Director of CPD. Regular communication between the Lead Nurse Planner and the ANCC Accreditation Program Office is important. An annual report is required of all Accredited Providers and the Lead Nurse Planner will assist the Director of CPD with details of the report.
Qualifications
- The Lead Nurse Planner is required to be a registered nurse with an active, unencumbered license.
- Must have a minimum of a graduate degree, with either a baccalaureate or graduate degree in nursing.
- Experience implementing ANCC accreditation criteria is required.
- Should have education and/or experience in adult education, the functions and expectations of an Accredited Provider Unit and the Lead Nurse Planner role.
- Ability to influence the development of education in compliance with current professional codes, standards, laws, or regulations governing CNE, CME, and continuing professional development.
- Familiarity with and ability to influence use of AMIA’s Inclusive Language and Context Style Guidelines [insert link].
- Completed Conflict of Interest form disclosing any relations with industry that could pose a real or perceived conflict of interest.
Estimated Time Required
Attend approximately 50% of planning meetings for the AMIA Clinical Informatics Conference, Annual Symposium, and work on some enduring materials that offer nursing credit. Total approximate time is 40-45 hours annually.
Honorarium
AMIA will provide an honorarium commensurate with experience. AMIA will also offer complimentary registration to either Clinical Informatics Conference or the Annual Symposium though attendance is not a requirement of the role. Travel, lodging, and associated expenses are not covered by AMIA.
